Opening Doors

During the ‘Opening Doors Employer’ week, the Years 9 and 10 students had a chance to visit some of the local employers to see and hear what opportunities were available.

The week started with visits to OGL and MFG solicitors.  The students enjoyed deconstructing the computers and we learnt a lot about becoming a solicitor.

The fire station trip was to have included a talk with the firefighters but unfortunately, about half an hour before our arrival they were called to a fire.  Still the students had a good look around and got to sit in a fire engine.

Trips to the Safari Park and the police station went well.  Safari Park talked about the different departments and pointed out that it was not all about the animals there is far more jobs involved in running a park such as retail and hospitality.

Stone Manor was a good trip and the students got to see what was involved in running a hotel and that there were many other jobs not just reception, such as event management for things like weddings and proms.  It proved a favourite as they force-fed the students muffins and fresh fruit.

Four students took up the invitation to visit Elements Hair and Media Make-up at Kidderminster College.  In Media makeup, the girls had great fun making their hands look like they had had a nasty accident.  Next, they practiced dressing up hair for a prom or special event.

A trip to Avensys medical was very interesting. The engineers discussed the many various jobs available and the ways into the industry.  They were particularly interested in the training that involved a six-month stay in Florida.

The trips have allowed the students to see the many varied jobs available. Many apprenticeships are available which can lead to some very exciting jobs.
