The school was given its charter in 1636 by King Charles I, being the only school in England to bear his name, although the Foundation was established seventy years earlier by Thomas Blount, Esq., Lord of the Manor of Kidderminster.

The school was in the chantry of the Parish Church of St. Mary and All Saints from 1566 to 1848, when it moved to the site known as Woodfield, on the Bewdley Road.

In 1977 King Charles I School was formed when Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Hartlebury, was amalgamated with the two Kidderminster grammar schools, on the present site, which had been the home of the High School for Girls from 1912.

The merger proved a great success and over the last 25 years we have added steadily to buildings, facilities and our reputation as a successful school.
