Science College

King Charles I School is proud to be a specialist Science College and have been for six years. During this time, the school has developed excellent links with our partner schools and wider community.
Since the untimely passing of Dr Nigel Collins, the Science College has not had a full time manager, but with the appointment of Mr Stuart Arch - the school will move forward in the coming months. Some areas that the Science College is moving towards are:

• Leaders of the ContinU Triple Science Network
• Laying the foundations for our first International Links
• Working with the OGDEN Trust
• Level 6 and above “Gifted and Talented” project

The Science College Manager has recently revisited the aims and objectives of our Science College Status as redesignation is due in September. It has been broken down into two key areas:

• What non-specialism subjects can do to support the status?
• What a Science College means to my child?

Science College News

This term we have had a very busy start to 2010. The biggest news is the PEER bid for £25,000 of matched funding from the DCSF. We have been able to raise approximatley £34,000 in pledges from the trust and from various companies such as IMjack (software) (£15,000), and Sciencescope (£4,700).
Eileen Stead has been able to co-ordinate nearly £5,000 in pledges from the work that she does with local employers. The bid is about to be sent to the DCSF, and we await their response. We are planning to spend the capital grant on developing our ICT work, to create an 'Increasing interactivity' initiative to enhance student engagement in lessons.
The clear aim of this work is to raise standards by increased use of new technologies, both in lessons and in the key school performance indicators.

Alternative Olympics Week

Through SSAT funding obtained by King Charles I School students, we have recently had an alternative Olympics week which featured such events as water polo, tug of war and ultimate Frisbee!

The highlight of the week was the Wheelchair Basketball Experience - Gordon Perry, a GB international and top flight coach, worked with our GCSE and A level P.E students for a whole day on Tuesday 24th November.

What Does Being a Member of a Science College Mean to My Child?

• Every child is provided with a challenging environment in which to study, where high quality teaching and learning takes place.

• Every child will be enrolled at a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in scientific, technological, enterprising and vocational education. This will provide access to a variety of pathways which meets each students individual needs.

• Every child has the opportunity to be involved in the high quality Science and Technology Clubs, working on aspects of these subjects not covered in curriculum time, which can lead to other qualifications.

• Be at the forefront of local and national development in Science and Mathematics, becoming involved in initiatives and competitions to enrich provision for King Charles students and those in local schools.

• Science & Mathematics promotes those skills which prepare students for the challenges of the world of work and lifelong learning, including strong communication skills, ability to work well in a team, thinking and analytical skills, problem solving and creativity.
