Physical Education

P.E. at King Charles I School:

Physical Education continues to be a very successful and popular subject, which motivates and enthuses pupils at the school. The department offer an extensive range of activities as part of the curriculum and during the extra-curricular programme.

The Department:

The PE Staff have grown significantly in number and now consists of 11 members. The majority of the department have various responsibilities within the school including Year Coordinators, Assistant Year Coordinators, Curriculum Area Manager, Deputy Head and our PESSCO.

The Pupils:

The department have an excellent working relationship with our pupils which is based on mutual respect. The majority are highly motivated and enjoy PE. Sit out is very low which is a testament to the staff and our policy of ‘everyone changes for PE’.

Extra-curricular:

All members of the department dedicate a significant amount of time to clubs, fixtures and a variety of additional sporting events.

Trampolining has grown in popularity and the school are now well equipped to deliver this. Traditional sports are very popular and we have significant success in the district and county competitions. Teams include football, rugby, netball, basketball, rounders, cricket, badminton and hockey.

The school also attend a number of festival events, which are organised for the district to attract a wider variety of pupils.

For pupil's that choose not to take P.E. at GCSE Level

P.E is an available subject for pupils that decide not to take it at GCSE level. Year 10 & 11 pupils are given the opportunity to specialise in a smaller number of activities as part of the Options Scheme. Activities which are offered are:

Football, Health and Fitness, Swimming, Table Tennis, Badminton, Dance, Trampolining, Basketball, Netball, Rugby, Tennis, Rounders, Cricket and Athletics.

JSLA - The Junior Sports Leader Award is to give pupils between the ages of 14-16 to further develop skills of sports leadership. The course involves 30 hours of training done over two terms. The assessment is continuous and progressive, ending in a final Sports Leadership day.

Students will opt for 2 different activities during a term and cover approximately 12 lessons of each. The activities will heavily depend on ‘student voice’, staff and facilities. Examination students are advised to specialise in their assessed activities.
