At King Charles I School, all students follow a study programme that is tailored to their individual needs and aspirations. Students choose at least three A level (or equivalent) subjects – some students are able to choose four A levels, if this is deemed suitable. Our collaboration with Haybridge High School and Hagley Catholic school means that we are able offer a wide range of applied and academic courses to our students. At the start of Year 12, students have the opportunity to enrol in further accredited enrichment qualifications such as the Level  3 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or Level 3 Core Maths. More information on these can be found in the enrichment link.

Students who do not achieve a GCSE grade 4 in maths or English (only one of these and students will have been close to achieving a 4 in one of these) may still be able to enrol; however, this will be assessed on a case-by-case basis as to whether this pathway is the most appropriate given their subject choices (there will be limited options available) and will be required to continue the GCSE subject they didn’t achieve a 4 in as part of their study programme. Students have timetabled lessons during the week with subject specialists to support them to achieve their GCSE.

The Sixth Form study programme also includes our Personal Development Programme; all students in Year 12 and 13 will have one hour a week with a sixth form experienced teacher who will deliver sessions on Study Skills (A Level Mindset); Revision Skills; Careers – apprenticeships, employment, university and UCAS; deliver the KS5 PSHE curriculum and pastoral proactive tasks to develop skills such as communication skills. Students will remain in these smaller groups throughout a given year and their assigned teacher will get to know students well as a source of support and work with students closely on their particular pathways and personal development needs to further our tailored provision. 

In addition to this, we have daily tutorials at the start of the day where students can speak to the sixth form team, grab a cuppa and prepare for the day. During these tutorials, support will be available where needed and also a structured programme of enrichment activities such as Peer Mentoring, British Sign Language course, debating, charity and events planning, completion of MOOCs, current affairs quizzes and assemblies and talks with speakers from a variety of employment sectors to boost students’ super and extra-curricular diets.

We provide an ongoing programme of work-related opportunities such as attending the annual UCAS Discovery Day, industry-specific career talks, Higher Education platforms such as Unifrog and Sprout and university masterclass opportunities. The university application process closely guided from start to finish. Year 12 and 13 will also have access to our independent careers advisor. All students take part in a week long work experience in Year 12 in the July of Year 12 in order to help better prepare them for the world of work.

As a school, we are constantly reviewing and evaluating our programme of study to ensure that it meets the needs of our students. Our goal is to ensure that all students leave sixth form with not only the qualifications that they need progress to the next stage, but also the information they need to make informed decisions about their future.
