Personal Development

We strive to help our students embody our four core values: commitment, integrity, ambition, and creativity. By making the most of the opportunities and experiences available throughout their KCI journey, our students will develop the skills and qualities they need to succeed in their future lives. A broad range of opportunities – including enrichment activities across the core entitlement, leadership, careers and community engagement ensures are students are supported to explore their interests and talents.

The Character Academy sits at the heart of our Personal Development Programme, enriching the lives of students across all schools within the Four Stones Gateway Trust. It offers meaningful experiences that help our young people grow into confident, curious and engaged individuals. Across the Trust, schools share best practice and coordinate opportunities to maximise impact. To bring this vision to life, we have four key pledges to our students.

The main strands of our Personal Development curriculum include our pastoral and ethics curriculum, careers, extra- curricular enrichment, leadership and rewards.

At KCI, students take part in a daily pastoral programme during tutor time that supports both their personal development and academic growth. This includes assemblies that explore current affairs, global events, and our core values, alongside celebration and praise assemblies that recognise student achievements.

Tutor time also provides dedicated opportunities for shared reading, where students enjoy short stories, novels, and a range of engaging texts together. Through regular reading aloud and discussion, students build confidence, develop fluency, and foster a lifelong love of reading in a supportive environment.

Our tutorial programme further enriches the ethics curriculum by enabling tutors to explore key themes and contemporary issues throughout the academic year. These sessions encourage students to think critically, reflect on different perspectives, and develop the knowledge, values, and skills needed to become informed and responsible members of our school community.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCES

At King Charles I School our Careers programme is about more than just planning the next step—it is about unlocking potential, sparking ambition, and preparing our students to thrive in an ever-changing world Careers – King Charles I School

Sport

Here at King Charles I School the Year 9 PE Leadership Academy gives students the opportunity to develop leadership skills by leading and supporting primary school children in a range of physical activities throughout the academic year. Students plan and deliver sessions in:

  • Swimming
  • Cricket
  • Multi-skills (Reception, Year 1, 2, 3)
  • Netball
  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Dodgeball
  • Team building
  • Boccia
  • Indoor Athletics

Through these experiences, students build confidence, communication and teamwork skills while acting as positive role models and developing a passion for leadership and sport. The Leadership Academy provides valuable opportunities for personal development, helping students build resilience, organisation and decision–making skills in a practical environment

Benefits to mentees and mentors:

At King Charles I school, we have developed our Peer Mentoring programme to strengthen the sense of safety, belonging, and student voice across our whole school community.

Transition and adolescence can be challenging for some students in Years 7 to 10, and we recognised that regular support from trained sixth form mentors provides a unique kind of relatability that complements adult interventions. Peer mentoring sessions are typically delivered each week during tutorial sessions. Year 12 and 13 students act as positive role models, helping our younger students navigate secondary school life including routines, friendships and academic pressures while normalising conversations around resilience and wellbeing.  At the same time, the programme develops empathy, leadership and communication skills in our sixth formers, preparing them for life beyond school.

Ultimately, this initiative reflects our school commitment to inclusive support, early intervention, and a culture where students feel, heard, seen and empowered to achieve and succeed.

Benefits to mentors:

The Peer Mentoring programme provides a powerful opportunity for personal growth and leadership development for our sixth form students. By supporting younger students mentors build problem solving skills, active listening and self-confidence, all of which are highly valued in higher education and employment. Peer mentoring sessions are typically delivered each week during tutorial sessions

The Peer Mentoring role encourages patience, empathy, and emotional intelligence, as mentors learn to respond sensitively to a range of students needs while maintain appropriate boundaries. It also fosters a strong sense of pride and responsibility, as they see the positive impact of their support on others.

Importantly, the experience also gives mentors meaningful evidence for UCAS applications, interviews and apprenticeships, demonstrating commitment and initiative, and the ability to contribute positively to a community.

Our house representative programme gives sixth form students the opportunity to take an active role in shaping the house system. The house reps will work alongside staff to encourage participation, strengthen house identity and create a positive and inclusive environment for all students.

Throughout the academic year, the sixth form house reps will help to plan, organise and deliver a range of house activities including:

  • House competitions and challenges
  • Fundraising and charity events
  • Team-building activities
  • Whole-school events
  • Opportunities to promote house spirit and participation

Through their role, students will develop valuable skills in communication, teamwork and decision-making. Alongside gaining experience of taking responsibility and encouraging their peers to get involved within the house system.

The house representative programme House System – King Charles I School

provides sixth form students with a meaningful opportunity to make a positive contribution to school life, while developing confidence and leadership skills as they work alongside our key stage 3 & 4 students, which will support them beyond their time at school.
