Young carers
Are you a Young carer?
A young carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 who provides regular care, practical help, or emotional support to a family member who may have a physical illness or disability, mental health condition, learning difficulty, substance misuse issue, or additional support need.
Many young carers undertake responsibilities beyond what would normally be expected for their age. While some students may openly discuss their home circumstances, many remain hidden due to stigma, fear of outside involvement, or because they do not recognise themselves as young carers.
Young carers may:
- Cook, clean, shop, or manage household tasks
- Care for siblings
- Provide emotional support to parents or relatives
- Help with medication or appointments
- Assist with personal care or mobility
- Translate or communicate on behalf of family members
- Monitor the safety and wellbeing of a relative
